Installation of Basic Graphical Environment (X Window System) in ArchLinux [Tutorial]

Have you installed the base system ArchLinux? Perfect! The next step, before installing any desktop environment (GNOME, KDE, Xfce, Etc), is the basic graphical installation, or the X Window System, Also known as X11 ,Or simply X.

Before starting, make a general upgrade of the system:
sudo pacman -Syu
Ready? Begin!

Step 1: Install Xorg
First install the base packages Xorg (Implementation open source of X Window System):
sudo pacman -S xorg-server xorg-xinit xorg-utils xorg-server-utils
To add support 3D:
sudo pacman -S mesa mesa-demos
Step 2: Install the Video Driver
This step is not complicated, but it is where many users have trouble even cause them to desist from installing and using ArchLinux. Do not be afraid to install the Video driver! We just have to follow a few pointers.

First of all, we know that our brand and model video card, for which we will use:
lspci
It displays a list of devices hardware of our team. Find the line video card (Tip: You can use lspci | grep VGA to filter the output of the command).

If your video card is nVidia
Usually, the driver free Nouveau is sufficient for most users, and is recommended:
sudo pacman -S xf86-video-nouveau
Additionally, to add 3D support (experimental phase):
sudo pacman -S nouveau-dri
If for some reason Nouveau is not to your liking or not functioning properly on your system, the recommendation is to use drivers owners.

To install the proprietary driver for newer video cards (GeForce 6 onwards):
sudo pacman -S nvidia nvidia-utils
If your video card is not so recent (GeForce 5 FX series):
sudo pacman -S nvidia-173xx nvidia-173xx-utils
You must reboot for the changes to take effect. Next, we configure the newly installed driver of nVidia:
sudo nvidia-xconfig
This command will create (or edit if already exists) the configuration file /etc/X11/xorg.conf according to your hardware specific.

If your video card is ATI
For this type of video card, install the driver must xf86-video-ati (radeon), Which work with the Chipset to HD 4xxx (Last R700 Chipset) And for HD 5xxx (Last R800 Chipset).

sudo pacman -S xf86-video-ati
Detail: The controller xf86-video-ati is recognized as "radeon" By Xorg (In /etc/X11/xorg.conf).

If your video card is Intel
For motherboards Marks Intel ,That have integrated video card (GPU), Just install the following driver:
sudo pacman -S xf86-video-intel
Work in GPUs most common, such as Intel GMA 900 (Chipset 910, 915) And Intel GMA 950 (chipset 945).

If you are installing ArchLinux low VirtualBox
First we install the base package:
sudo pacman -S virtualbox-archlinux-additions
And then load the modules kernel of VirtualBox:
sudo modprobe -a vboxguest vboxsf vboxvideo
For these modules are loaded each time the system boots, we add to the array MODULES in the configuration file /etc/rc.conf:
MODULES(... vboxguest vboxsf vboxvideo)
If your video card is different from previous
To see the complete list of video drivers open-sourcePerforms the following query:

pacman -Ss xf86-video
Check carefully the list of previous command output, and identifies the driver appropriate to your video card. For example, to install the driver for Savage:
sudo pacman -S xf86-video-savage
If none are appropriate to your video card driver vesa is the most generic, but not supported 3D or acceleration hardware:
sudo pacman -S xf86-video-vesa
Step 3: Testing Graphical
Before installing GNOME, KDE or desktop environment of your choice, I highly recommend you verify the basic GUI works properly (and avoid a headache later), for which we will install the window manager default X: twm.
sudo pacman -S xorg-twm xorg-xclock xterm
If Xorg installed before creating your username (if you followed the steps from the last tutorial, you need not worry about this detail), there will be an empty file .xinitrc your $HOME, Which need to remove to properly initialize the graphical environment.
rm ~/.xinitrc
Additionally, we need the "message bus” (dbus) Is installed:
sudo pacman -S dbus
Then run the daemon dbus:
sudo rc.d start dbus
Do not forget to add dbus settlement DAEMONS within /etc/rc.conf to automatically start whenever you boot the system:
DAEMONS=(... dbus ...)
Finally, run Xorg!:
startx
Appear a simple windows, clock, and your mouse should work. If so, you did it!, You have installed and configured your environment perfectly Basic Chart, ready to proceed to installation GNOME, KDE ,Etc..

Ah yes, out of twmYou can use the command:

sudo pkill X
or reboot the system:
sudo reboot
Incidentally, the above information is extracted from the wonderful Official ArchLinux Wiki, Which I recommend you see if you have any questions, or to expand your knowledge of this magnificent distro.

Tips to extend your laptop's battery on Linux Intel

We've been discussing the battery problems experienced by some users of Linux distributions ,Especially in the case of those who kernel 2.6.38 feature. The duration of these batteries can be significantly reduced in that case, even with newer kernels 3.0 and future 3.1-.

Here offers some tips to not only solve that problem, but for our laptops even more efficient power consumption, and focus, though, the users of laptops with Intel chips (Both CPU and GPU), and the new Sandy Bridge. Here are the tips:
  • Enable ASPM: Add "pcie_aspm=force" in boot arguments in our kernel will allow us to ensure that the problem with kernels that disable ASPM serial off the main problem of kernel 2.6.38 - disappears..
  • i915.i915_enable_rc6=1: This feature allows the GPU into a state of low power consumption when the GPU is idle without work.
  • i915.i915_enable_fbc=1: This option enables the kernel called FBC (Frame-Buffer Compression) for Intel graphics controllers. It uses less bandwidth, memory, and this contributes to lower power consumption.
  • i915.lvds_downclock=1: The LVDS clock frequency may also be reduced and save energy, but on systems that do not support LVDS complete this may cause an annoying flicker on the screen.
These options can be add to the boot loader GRUP in the file /boot/grub/grub.cfg to be permanent, or can be passed by hand to load the i915 module in case of counting on such chips. If you do not use the Intel graphics driver for Linux these changes will not offer any improvement in the autonomy of your battery.

The tests conducted that did possess such GPUs and showed that indeed the battery consumption with these options enabled can make significant improvements in various scenarios, so if you have a laptop with Intel GPU, try it.

GIMP 2.7.3 for single window mode and layer groups

Perhaps the evolution of GIMP not as fast as we would like everyone, but its developers are still trying to advance to GIMP 2.8 Expected output. Meanwhile they appear new versions of the 2.7.x branch that incorporate features of which also mentioned a long time.

Thus, we have a GIMP 2.7.3 near-final version of single-window mode that mimics the interface of Photoshop and that was one of the most popular requests by users of this application. Of course, this mode of operation is not available by default and must be activated from the menu Windows-> Single Window Mode.

There other developments in GIMP 2.7.3, Namely:

  • Support for layer groups
  • Session Management
  • Improved text editing in the 'canvas'
  • Inclusion of a button to lock the contents in the layers, channels and paths.
  • Overlay to apply cutting guide image (crop) following the "rule of fifths"
You can check the list of new features in this version in official page for developers ,And now only have to wait to meet the plans and GIMP 2.8 appears before the end of the year.

5 reasons to wait Mandriva 2011

Lack exactly one week to see the light Mandriva 2011 ,And although there contentious issuesIt is clear that the good feelings outweigh the murky: it is a special case. As such, we will make a brief review of all you have to offer the new version of a GNU/Linux is ready to reclaim the site for quite lost.

But today we are not here to deny the past, but to face the future with the best face possible, know the 5 reasons to wait for Mandriva 2011:

1. The new

The first reason is obvious and inherent in any major release in the panorama of GNU/Linux, especially if we talk about the most famous: arouse interest developments. Furthermore, it is reasonable to think that Mandriva, as we say, has earned a special interest in everything that has happened in recent times and all it promises to those who come.

2. Resurrection

No, The distribution and the project have never been dead, but not that rebosasen vitality of late, quite the opposite.

This point follows the previous one, is that Mandriva 2011 will be a whole test for the health of project company. Most notably its users are eager to see if it meets all the promises, and surely even those who feel they are not interested to see if the new version glows or blurs.

In fact, there are many voices that predict or around all large or the final collapse ,But I dare not come forward will be neither one nor the other.

3. The desktop ROSA

You can not understand everything that is going to be Mandriva 2011 without knowing ROSA Lab ,The Russian team of developers has joined Mandriva company in the construction of this new version to give the facelift largest ever seen in years distribution.

But the touch is not left alone ROSA in appearance, their reach, or additions to make a come- Desktop Experience Stackfolder with additions like the new application launcher (with Nepomuk integration included) or Mandriva 2Safe/ROSA Sync, the new service Synchronization and file storage in the cloud for users of exclusive distribution.

4. KDE

The jump KDE desktop environment unique in Mandriva 2011 is a statement of intent (come on, that promised to be "the best KDE distro in the world!"). This movement is derived from the previous point, and although you can install other desktops via the software manager (GNOME 2.32, Xfce 4.80 and LXDE), there will be no official version for desktop specific installation, only to offer the community , which are now working to launch a LXDE edition.

In short, the total commitment is KDE, the desktop version and enjoyed by those who embark on Mandriva 2011 will SC KDE 4.6.5.

5. Frontier technologies and new developments

If Fedora has a well deserved reputation for pioneering distribution, Mandriva 2011 is not doing much behind as you might think. True, it is conservative on many issues, such as the kernel and desktop versions, but ventures into some of the latest versions of Systemd, RPM 5... Not to mention some of its innovations in the form of tools, however, it appears that almost none will be on time for the coming-of Mandriva 2011. We talked about his new package manager, users, etc., which can try installing them separately.

Time extended support

The extra point is not officially confirmed, but the developers of the distribution are working to launch a version of Extended Support, the style of the Ubuntu LTS ,Towards the end of the year. It would not be surprising that it is the same for Mandriva 2011 which will extend the support, so it's something to consider.

If you want more information you can go through the last special items that we have dedicated to the distribution, being seductive promise ,For that Elementary, dear user, Or what was the last step towards the final. They serve as an approach, but beware Mandriva is much more in 2011 than we have told so far ,And recounted some of the things already have changed, so that they actually have to wait to Mandriva 2011 to expand, to reaffirm or withdraw everything we said about it.

Will from next Monday 29 August when we celebrate the launch, testing the finished product and consider the system as you play. Until then, it has to wait. It is difficult to tell whether the final quality of Mandriva 2011 will be required to match, but you can not deny is that its developers have not tried until the very end of its development cycle.

From KDE 4 to GNOME 2 in 3 minutes

I recently had to the answer is Xfce. The answer to those so Agustito in GNOME 2 and do not want experiments or the performance of your PC will suffer the least, but surely there are many other powerful teams that want to stick with the old classic GNOME scheme without sacrificing the power of a desktop first. For all of them obviously is KDE.

Configuring the Plasma interface for quasi Trace the GNOME 2 is a very simple task, and although not everything is exactly the same, the possibilities are much more powerful thanks to the famous plasmoids.

Taking the example of the header image, belonging to GNOME 2 default Debian LennyI recorded a video of my KDE desktop with creating that same configuration (or closest). The only thing I have not managed to recreate the main menu, but the result meets the same, takes up less space and is more likely.

From KDE 4 to GNOME 2 in 3 minutes

You see, the video does not reflect any feat is all very easy to do and earns a truly comprehensive "Places" to the Quick Access plasmoid and tools almost unnecessary system using a "shelf".

Then it is giving the personal touch you want each and you can get some atrocity (I'm sure that with more than five minutes of interest may be much better

Well, stay there as a curiosity. The next article in this series will be from KDE 4 to GNOME 3…But I can say yet what will it take or will be achieved so easily. We'll see.

Tip: Solving the problem of automatic mounting of USB drives in Debian Squeeze

Good day dear readers, once again, after another little absence, I take this space to share with you a little tip that is really useful for users of Debian Squeeze.

Turns out, though Debian Squeeze is a distribution very solid, stable and interesting, I had problems mounting USB drives, an error quite sensible, but browsing the net I was lucky to find a solution to the problem.

When we try to automatically mount a USB drive in Debian Squeeze we get the following error message:

When you run the command that tells us the error message on a terminal we get:

An unsatisfactory answer, however, we are lucky because we pragmart recommended the following steps to solve this problem:

1) Open a terminal (Menu>Accessories>Terminal) and we log in as root, by typing:
su
We asked our root password, the digits and go to the next step.

2) Edit the text file /etc/fstab ,To do this in the terminal write the following:
gedit /etc/fstab
Note:We can also use nano, vim, kedit or any text editor according to preference.

By doing so, opens a text file as follows:

3) Locate the line that causes the problem and delete the text file, in my case:

/dev/sdb1       /media/cdrom0   udf,iso9660 user,noauto     0       0
Note: To choose the error line should look good in the error message, I showed at the beginning, in my case read: "….. bad superblock on /dev/sdb1" As you get it in this message, choose the line that you must delete the text file fstab

After clearing the error line, the file is as follows:

Save the changes, close the gedit and ready, from now we will have no problem with automatic mounting of our USB drives:

Thank you very much for your attention, dear readers see you later.

How to install Google Earth on Ubuntu

I never thought Google Earth was installed so hard. I've been hours trying to make it work until we have achieved As for me has not been easy, I do this article for people who have had the same problems as me.

When one thinks of installing Google Earth ,first thing is to look if you are in the repositories. No, not at least in Ubuntu (surely Arch yes, they are very cool ). There is a package called googleearth-package but we have no idea how it works Later perhaps we serve.

as we will Google Page ,Which are very nice people and certainly has packages for Ubuntu. Exactly! And they have 32 and 64 bits

First disappointment: On the sets which are bundles .deb and are .bin. So we did not get anywhere.

Executive because the downloaded file:

./GoogleEarthLinux.bin
Everything seems to be running as smoothly until ... Bang! Error song:
Verifying archive integrity... All good.
Uncompressing Google Earth for GNU/Linux 5.2.1.1588..............................................................
setup.data/setup.xml:1: parser error : Document is empty
^
setup.data/setup.xml:1: parser error : Start tag expected, '
^
No se pudo cargar 'setup.data/setup.xml'
The error is self explanatory ¬ ¬ 'Come on, saving you hours of searching the Internet This error has two solutions, but explain that I have followed to ensure that, despite the unwillingness of this program will be installed on my computer, Google Earth works. We will use the package that we did not know what served.
sudo apt-get install googleearth-package lsb-core ttf-mscorefonts-installer
It turns out that this package is used to generate a .deb fit for our system with which we can install Google Earth. Without further ado, the wonderful generate .deb she longed to have:
sudo make-googleearth-package --force
After a while, we will have our file, so we just install it:
sudo dpkg -i googleearth*.deb
Run the program from the terminal, I do not trust:
samuel@R580:~$ googleearth
/usr/lib/googleearth/googleearth-bin: error while loading shared libraries: libGL.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
You're hesitating, right? More problems? ... ... ... Well, I save so many hours of search and tell you the solution to this problem, the end is not bad. It turns out that Google Earth is silly (I think that was clear, seeing the above errors) and search a library that we secure the system, but looks where he gives the real win. What we do is put the library in front of the eyes, so that you can not complain:
cd /usr/lib/googleearth
sudo wget http://librarian.launchpad.net/7037027/libGL.so.1 -O libGL.so.1
With this and a biscuit, we're supposed to have Google Earth installed only. Now you can cleanse the sweat of the brow

How to divide a file in Ubuntu

Introduction

Although today's email services whenever possible to send larger files, or even always, you can use other services from Dropbox, any other solution, there are moments when you may need to split a file into smaller files.

There are many ways to do it, but probably the quickest and easiest is through the terminal, and is split

Split
Split is a simple command that allows you to split a file into smaller ones. Its use is as simple as:
split [OPTION]... [INPUT [PREFIX]]
The options are:
  • -Suffix-length=N use suffixes of length N (default is 2)
  • -Bytes=SIZE sets the size of split files into SIZE
  • -Line-bytes=SIZE sets a maximum file size divided as SIZE
  • -Numeric-suffixes use numeric suffixes instead of alphabetic
  • -Lines=NUMBER puts the number of lines per file split
  • -Verbose prints a diagnostic after each split file is created
  • -Help show help
  • -Version prints the version of split
The size, SIZE, may be one of the following: KB 1000, K 1024, MB 1000*1000, M 1024*1024, and so on for G, T, P, E, Z, Y.

For example:
split --bytes=10M --suffix-length=3 --numeric-suffixes prueba DIV
the file "test" has a size of just over 79 MB or so, with this command will divide in 7 files of 10 MB and one with the rest, which begin with the prefix DIV, and the suffix is numeric and 3 characters length, as you can see in the image below:

Unite
Once the files have arrived and you did what you had to do with them, we have to do the reverse: "link" and is a simple operation like the above simply

cat DIV* > prueba
Conclusion
Indeed, there are graphical tools can do wonders when it comes to split a file and then attach it again, however, with this pair of command "split" and "cat", simplicity and speed is absolute. If you're still seems awkward to use split, you can always create an alias for it and simplify it further.

Tip: Change "hotkeys" on GNOME desktop applications

More than any we have found that some of the key combinations you use to access some features we do not like or want to create a new one that does not. The truth is that in Gnome 3 is something very simple.
This tip will not work in Gnome2 and therefore does not apply to Natty Narwhal (Using Gnome2), but the logic is pretty similar, yes, I know the exact names of the keys-, used gconf-editor instead of dconf-editor and gconftool-2 instead of gsettings.
Recipe
Run the dconf-editor (Equivalent to the beloved gconf-editor ,But for Gnome3) and seek the following record:

We find several keys And we call can-change-accels which by default (value false to be precise). The change then is simple ticket.

Now we just go to any application that is part of the Gnome 3 desktop -Evince for example- and we position the cursor on the menu item you want to change:

And press the desired combination is important remember that only have position the cursor and do not click with him. I suggest you make modifications after the value back to its original state, because as you see it is quite easy to make an unwanted change in error.

The truth is there even a way easier as above, but I wanted to put it after understand what they are doing and is a small command:

gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.interface can-change-accels true
No doubt they will have occurred opposite the command to return to its original state:
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.interface can-change-accels false
You see, this logic can be extended to any other aspect of the desktop
