Recover deleted files in Linux

Have you deleted a file accidentally in Linux and now want to try to get it back? The situation sure sounds like you, and although in some cases the recovery is not possible, There are other ways of trying to undelete file.

So we have a complete tutorial on Linux.com, which also speak of how repair file systems on Linux using e2fsck tool, One of the legendary on Linux and supports Ext2, Ext3 and Ext4.

The most interesting part of the tutorial is by far the recovery of deleted files, which first describe the process that occurs when you delete a file, an interesting analysis for understanding what happens when we ran a rm on any file. In fact, in the same explanation is a recovery, "a hair" of a deleted file evidence to show the art work.

From this comes the description of a specific tool to recover deleted files on Linux, called Scalpel. The installation of this utility is trivial, in Ubuntu, for example, is sufficient to sudo apt-get install scalpel- And once installed will have to edit the file /etc/scalpel/scalpel.conf  to set the file extensions you want to retrieve.

The Released utility has this syntax:

sudo scalpel /dev/sdX -o ~/RECUPERADOS
being X : the partition number you want to scan and where we assume that the deleted file. The process takes, can reach an hour or more ,Depending on the size of the partition, but if we are lucky in the directory we created RECOVERED we can see how the files are sought.

Eye have to be realistic with these tools: File Recovery time depends on the execute. If you have deleted a file and within minutes we realize that we have a good chance to recover so. But if we want to recover a file of months ago, we have much more complicated.

The explanation is simple: during all that time we will have used the hard disk so intense, writing and deleting other data and therefore, modifying the disk sectors, Which were marked as available when you delete the files and therefore may have been busy with other information.

So keep that in mind: if you try to recover deleted files, better be sooner.

How to Create applications for Android in a simple way

To create applications for Android no programming is needed, it only takes App Inventor of google, which is basically a web system to create applications for Android. With Google App Inventor Android can store data of users, create contests and access to phone functions like the GPS sensor. "You can create any application you can imagine," he said in from Google.

The application itself consists of 3 modules.
  1. An online ide from which we can add the different elements that tell our application.
  2. An SDK that will be installed on our machine, it is necessary to compile applications.
  3. Block editor is a java application that allows us to program our application, indicating what we do when they interact with online ide.

Incorporated into the sdk a emulator of android terminal, where we test our applications if we do not have telephone.

App inventor also can be used from windows, linux or mac os. It's really an interesting alternative for those without programming knowledge or time to learn.

How to activate Facebook messages

Today we made a review in IPhone News on new feature Facebook messages (Control of our private, sms, chat and email from Facebook from our profile network social). Lots of users asked us how to turn this option.

For now it is a platform not in operation in all countries. However, you can try two methods:

  • A friend in Facebook with an account in the United States or any other country with the platform will invite selected from the control panel of your message using the new option.

  • Accessing this website and requesting the service.

You can comment on this article, what were the results.

We tested exclusively the new platform of Facebook messages

In November we echo Facebook's intentions to launch a single platform to integrate private messages, chat, email and text (All from our profiles network social). He also announced the possibility of creating emails with the address "@Facebook.com".

we had to detail in IPhone News :

Once you've been accepted into the testing program, the Facebook app on our iPhone enabled automatically in a few weeks the new option without having to download any updates. We will display the image above.

The configuration is already done: then you will have access to all our inboxes from "Inbox". In this section you can read our email, our conversations saved chat, our email Facebook and text messages. We may also reply to them all from the same site.

Apple updated the bumpers for iPhone 4 CDMA

Is the redesign of the antenna the best solution that has happened to Apple engineers? Now Apple will have to build some new bumpers with a small change ,The lock button is a few millimeters below. The remaining cases manufacturers will have to do the same, we're talking about a lot of money for such a small change.

Can not you redesign the antenna without changing this little detail? How many people will be the wrong case the store does not look good if is for your iPhone 4 model?

As you see I strongly disagree with this change, the design has to take the economy for the company and comfort to the user (and business) and I think a big hassle for Apple and other manufacturers have to manufacture bags two different models, and I think will take the user to confusion.

Android 2.4 Ice Cream can arrive the next summer

Relatively recently that Android 2.3 Gingerbread has come to the mobile platform, but the company is already embroiled in the next version of the system: Android 2.4 Ice Cream. This new version should arrive sometime in the summer months ,And can see a public presentation at the Google IO next May.

If true, Google would comply with the release pattern was proposed to himself after reducing the frequency of updates a couple of major releases each year ,As more or less Ubuntu. In terms of developments that can bring this new version of the system, unfortunately there is not any evidence.

With this rate of development of the free mobile system from Google continues to grow, and of fact has exceeded IOS of Apple in sales within the United States after reaching a 26% market share compared with 25% of the competitor. Any bets on what can bring ice cream Google?

Goo.gl already have API and can be integrated into any program

Google is doing step by step with the shortening of URLs. First was closed goo.gl, Used only by FeedBurner and Google Toolbar (Maps came later). Then it became available to anyone could shorten with goo.gl. Of course, only from its website.

Today we can say that Google has a full shortening due to the opening of its API. With it, any programmer can shorten URLs or expand with goo.gl from your program ,So soon as Twitter and Seesmic client may include the shortening, in addition to the more than probable extensions and bookmarklets for web browsers.

According to Google, goo.gl is faster and safer the rest of shortening. Although I doubt not, the differences between this and other shortening are so small they are barely noticeable. Therefore, I do not think you can compete with all what they offer and settled shortening, Bit.ly mainly.

Google stop supporting H.264 video codec in Chrome

As you read it, after all that has rained Google's web browser fails to support the H.264 video codec to focus on options open as WebM or Theora.

I read it and hard to believe, the truth: Google Chrome fails to support the H.264 video codec, almost de facto standard for high definition that supports most of the audiovisual industry and technology. The reasons for this move gives us the Mike Jazayeri, product manager at Google, in an article published in The Chromium Blog:

We expect a more rapid innovation in the platform of the networked media this year and are focusing our investments in technologies that have been developed under the principles of the open web. To this end, we are changing the Chrome support for HTML 5 to make it consistent with the codecs and supported by the open project Chromium. In particular, we are supporting WebM (VP8) and Theora, and will consider adding support for other high-definition open codecs in the future. Although H.264 plays an important role in the video, our goal is to enable open innovation, so this codec support will be withdrawn and our resources are aimed at fully open technologies.
With this move, Google it is taking a pulse medium industry, Especially a prominent name: Apple, one of the main promoters of H.264 while detractors Flash ... Because Google is betting on Adobe technology as HTML 5 and develop WebM. A nonsense? :
  • The industry spoke and said H.264.
  • Google already paid the "millionaire" license to use the codec both in their browsers as web services like YouTube (with regard to YouTube, have not referred to whether the portal will continue to support H.264 video or not ... .)
  • WebM not yet ready. Does it? For herself in the river without life jackets is not very prudent.
  • Google is betting on Flash, and most, if not all-Flash videos in high definition are encoded with H.264.
  • Flash is as closed as H.264 ...?
The Internet giant is not alone in its efforts to open web, with prominent partners such as Mozilla, Opera or Linux Foundation, but only he has real power to change things. Did the move go well? Let's hope so.

Personally I applaud the initiative of Google, but leaves me a bit stunned by the reasons already given. On the other hand, Who is more daring, Google for not supporting H.264 or Apple for doing the same with Flash in flagship products such as iPhone and iPad?

How to format a USB or removable hard drive on Ubuntu?

To format a file system on Ubuntu or any other distribution, we do not usually have a contextual menu button "Format ..." or something similar. However, we do have the necessary tools.

gnome-format

If you want you can use graphical interface gnome-format, A program of the Gnome project is already discontinued, but it does a good job. You can find it in your repository.

mkfs

The tool of Unix-like systems for this work is mkfs. Let's see what we do from the console to format a removable device.

What device?

First you'll know what device it is. To do this with the command mount show a list of all devices that are mounted at the time. Look for our device, which will be of style /dev/sdb1 through the reference we have in the mount point: /media/usb.

New filesystem

We can only create the new file system. Depending on the file system, use any of the following commands (as long as super users):
FAT32 (recommended for USB if you also use it in Windows): mkfs.vfat /dev/sdX
ext3: mkfs.ext3 /dev/sdX
ex4: mkfs.ext4 /dev/sdX
After a few seconds, the file system is created and we will have ready device.

[Firefox4] Interface in Windows and Overview

On Wednesday we mentioned in our article interface changes that will be in Firefox 4 ,But as we talked was generic to all systems (new interface, fixed tabs, news alerts pages), today we talk about all of the Windows interface, including a review of overview, which We previously.

Tabs on the title bar

In Firefox 4, and in Windows, the tabs are displayed in the window title, eliminating the space that existed in previous versions simply to display the title of the tab for which he was sailing.

Start button and right Bookmarks

(Not yet completed, subject to change). In this new version will be left in the left part of the address bar only back and forward button, and move to the far right of the taskbar start button next to your bookmarks.

Also, if you did not use the Bookmarks and have not added any to the bookmarks toolbar is automatically hidden, making more vertical space and adding the button you see in the image next to the home (the having a star).

Firefox menu

Although this menu is now also available in the version of Linux, is still not as stylized as in Windows, but you can use.

As you see, is a menu that shows the basic features of Firefox: new windows, printing, developers, options, accessories, help. This menu has been made to again remove vertical space by eliminating the menu bar to integrate everything on this button in the title bar.

overview

O TabCandy, as it was called at first, is integrated into the browser extension that lets you manage tabs and windows in a very visual. Just click on the button on the title bar with four rectangles (you can see in the second image in this article) and you can manage your tabs as you like.

Draw a rectangle with your mouse on a free site to create a new group. Drag tabs and commands as you want to do then with your browser. Search Wikipedia and keep all tabs organized.

You see, these are the major changes to Windows, remember that is the most used operating system and most users of Firefox.

Do you want to GIMP 2.8? Touches lend a hand

That is: The release of GIMP 2.8 is delayed again ,Because neither is sufficiently developed, and no money to hire labor to fill the gap. A good time for the community to respond, right?

If anything I got clear of the recent survey, is one of the failures was the failure to include, among others, the GIMP 2.8 (you can still vote until Saturday, and then talk about everything). By failures or unfair comparisons in which it can influence, GIMP is a spectacular program and one of the more established pillars of free software, Which we use self-worth and redundancy-free. But do not come to speak of GIMP in general, or the difference between free and free (not necessary, right?).

I come to tell you that the development of next-awaited version of this picture editor needs help to reach fruition, or at least to do so as soon as possible, Then as published in GIMP Users ,There are new features to polish and mistakes to overcome, but are some who take care of it, and now only three major developers are active.

You can collaborate with the project donating money to hire labor, but what are really looking for developers with the necessary skills to deal with the GIMP code ,So if any of you fit this description, you drop by to offer their services and contribute to the free software from the best: helping one of its flagships when you need it most.

Let no one take this news in apocalyptic plan, GIMP is a project that is in very good health and will succeed yes or yes ,But things do not play alone and sometimes lend a hand.

Android 2.2, is it a solution to fragmentation?

The existence of different versions of Android is one of the major criticisms of certain sectors, who see this as an obstacle to access a more powerful and efficient platform, but it seems that the fragmentation problem is solved.

In the latest survey by the portal developer can check of Android is apparent that Android 2.2 is already present in more than half terminals that access the Android Market applications, and Android 2.1 is also very popular.

In the last two weeks of activity assessed by the study Android Developers portal is shown as Android 2.2 is present in 51.8% of the terminals entering the market of applications for this platform, while Android 2.1 has a market share of 35.2%.

That means that the presence of terminals with outdated versions of Android is declining (4.7% for Android 1.5, and 7.9% for Android 1.6), what causes the problem of fragmentation of Android being reduced gradually.

In fact, all versions except  Android 2.2 are losing market share, Which shows that the majority of terminals available today offer this version of Android, or who have appeared for Android 2.2 updates by handset manufacturers so far had a previous version of the mobile operating system from Google.

Presentation of Android 3.0 Honeycomb in what will be the year of the tablets

During the CES 2011 held in the city of Las Vegas, Google presented a video what will be Android 3.0 Honeycomb. With a revamped interface and oriented tablets, more and more devices on the market, Google intends to continue to enter the consumer market with the leading operating system mobile Open Source.

As shown in the video, There is a complete redesign of the interface, Services and applications like YouTube and eBookstore have suffered a pretty big facelift, touting the power of the system and the hardware on which they work.

But with respect to the latter comes the bad news: it requires more powerful hardware, apparently based on dual-core processors, which will prevent the current equipment can be upgraded to Honeycomb, Including the Galaxy Tab.

On the other hand, one of the first devices to exhibit the new Google operating system is Motorola Xoom ,A tablet of 10.1 "powered by nVidia Tegra 2 and a set of features now standard in the art tablets, this tablet is added to the G-Slate, which not many details yet, but appears to be similar. The important thing is that it shows that Honeycomb is now ready and that the jurisdiction of the tablets this year will be brutal, probably, We are witnessing what will be the year of the tablets.

Android will be a major player in the world of tablets this year, but need not be unique.

Well, here's the interesting thing that I can get from this, the market for tablets is a new and emerging market, it is true that is now dominated by Apple, but Android is promoted more and more mainly because it's open source, Among other reasons, too soon to enter and to compete MeeGo and even Ubuntu is already being used in these devices.

All this represents a real opportunity for Linux and Free Software, Bearing in mind that Microsoft is so even ventured into this world as the projects mentioned above, the path is clear for the moment (though not for much longer). Not as you see Is this the opportunity of Linux and open source projects and free to reach the masses? What will it take for it?

KDE SC 4.6 RC2 is available now

A KDE developers announced On Christmas Eve KDE SC 4.6 RC1, And late yesterday I heard the news that KDE SC 4.6 RC2 is available now ,The latest version of the desktop environment that is nearing its final offer.

The information provided in the announcement is rather null: No data on whether any significant change, and all they show is that "this version serves as a final candidate testing before 4.6.0 is released on 26 January".

So, I have much more to say simply that You can download packages of the version from information page, And of course can download the source code for compile in your system if you urge it.

Install MP3 Diags 1.0.07 in Ubuntu by deb package

New version of MP3Diags, A tool that helps us to detect and repair problems in MP3 files that also has a tag editor with which you can download information from the album, including cover from MusicBrainz.

Another important component is the renaming of files, with which we can easily change the names of the MP3 based on ID3V2 tags.

MP3Diags is in the repositories and available for install from Synaptic. Now if you want to upgrade or install the latest version you can do with the deb package for:

[Firefox4] New Interface

We continue the special Firefox4, In this case we will discuss the new features for interface change and improvement of this.

The Mozilla team has dedicated much effort to improve the user experience in this new version. Let's review the major changes.

Tabs-on-top and animation

The tabs, Formerly placed below the address bar has changed, and now shown above ,Just below the title bar of the browser. In addition, when you open and close, there is a slight animation to make the most modern and smooth interface. You can disable this option on the property browser.tabs.animate and making it false.

Removing status bar, rod building supplements

The Status Bar, Which was once used to display the icons of the supplements, along with notifications about the status of the connection to the site and the direction in which we have the mouse (this has been moved to the address bar as we say below) was deleted and changed to bar accessories, which, as its name suggests, will only show icons and text matching accessories. Can be easily hidden by an "x" to close. All this to increase the vertical clearance for navigation.

button Go-stop-reload

The stop and refresh button page is moved from the navigation toolbar (next to the button back and forth) to the address bar ,To be integrated in this (though you can easily change by editing the interface back to its previous state).

Destination address in the Address bar

As discussed above, the web page address on which we have a mouse, its address ,Now is not shown in the status bar, if not in the address bar, Partially hiding the current and blurring the target.

This has always been to focus the light in one place to see where we are and where we go.

Notifications web pages

If you've browsed the web with Firefox for a while, you will have observed that sometimes the pages sent Notifications (Namely through the method alert () of JavaScript) usually were very annoying: navigation blocked (Were consistently above the window, unable to interact with the page) and automatically switches to the tab you sent him.

This has changed in Firefox4, as notifications will be tab-modal. What does it mean? Well, when you have an alert on a tab we do not block the entire browser ,If not just the current tab that has received the alert , also ,has changed the style, blurring the page from which it has been sent to bring the focus of our visit to the notification

Fixed tabs
Chrome-style, it comes to solve the horizontal space in navigation for users with lots of windows. It is mainly aimed at users who have the whole day open a particular page, such as a web application like GMail, and instead of taking a full-size tab, you can take only its icon ,Because it is easily recognizable. Simply open a tab, click the right mouse button and choose "Set tab". You can remove this property by the operation again.

These are the main changes that have Firefox to its new version, not all, and is likely to be iterated while the other betas, you can change some things, but for now, that's all. We hope that you like.

Recover your lost photos with Photorec

A user tells us in his blog that you may experience some you have had: trying to connect your digital camera to your PC or laptop (or remove the memory card and insert it into a card reader) and see that for some reason seems that the images (all or part) have been lost.

This disaster can be caused by many reasons, the cards can be corrupted sectors, for example-but if you're given this situation there are ways to fix it, or at least, have any chance of it.

This is what we have a small application in command line mode. Is called Photorec, and is developed under GPL license. In Linux is part of a larger suite called TestDisk. Once installed, you just have to launch the command

sudo photorec
What will we see a menu-driven interface of text, which will allow us work with our memory card and try to recover lost or defective sectors, as well as information that it seemed we had removed.

The tool is available for all platforms (including some curious as DOS or Solaris) and is able to partition files recueprar FAT, NTFS, Ext2 and ext3, and even HFS+. In this article of the official site explains how the application works, and we indicate

Add 3D Shadow in the Thumbnails of nautilus

Nautilus should be the most used file manager in linux as is that comes default with Ubuntu. Here we can see thumbnails of images or videos with an edge inelegant. In this super simple tutorial I explains how to change that edge by an effect on 3D.

This is how it should be:

And to do it alone we should write these commands in the console:
wget http://a.imageshack.us/img135/8666/thumbnailframe.png
sudo mv thumbnailframe.png /usr/share/pixmaps/nautilus/thumbnail_frame.png
killall nautilus
If you liked us and we return to the old effect, that is this:

We just have to type these commands in the console:
wget http://a.imageshack.us/img651/5790/thumbnailframey.png
sudo mv thumbnailframey.png /usr/share/pixmaps/nautilus/thumbnail_frame.png
killall nautilus
I hope you learn

How to recover Grub2 in Linux

The grub is the boot, is what allows us to choose between different operating systems to turn on the pc. But we fucked for example every time we install windows and it's really annoying that happens, nothing is more annoying than turning on the pc and it will not boot. But the truth is easy recover grub and all I need is a live cd of Ubuntu (or any distro that uses Grub2) and run a few simple commands. So ...

Step 1: Start with some live cd of Ubuntu

Step 2: In the console type the following:
sudo fdisk -l
With that may see the partitions on your system.

Step 3: Run
sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt
Where sda1 is where you have installed Ubuntu or Linux before I had installed grub. This unit may be different in each case (sda2, sda3, etc). May realize that unity is correct because in step 2 of the partitions has an asterisk in the 'Boot' or 'Home'

Step 4: Run
sudo grub-install –root-directory=/mnt/ /dev/sda
Here you should note that at the end says sda, not sda1. This value makes reference to the disk where this linux. If you have multiple disks may be the case with linux on the second disc then that value would be sdb.

Step 5: Now you can reboot and log into your linux, but as the former was replaced grub is more necessary to run a command to retrieve the previous entries (other operating systems you have installed):
sudo update-grub
And here a picture of what would be the entire process:

See program occupies more space in Ubuntu

I encounter a strange command to see Ubuntu programs which are occupying more space. And that is that? As a curious and perhaps also some discover that they have a heavy agenda and could no longer use uninstall and save disk space

The command is this:

dpkg-query --show --showformat='${Package;-50}\t${Installed-Size}\n' | sort -k 2 -n | grep -v deinstall | awk '{printf "%.3f MB \t %s\n",$2/(1024),$1}' | tail -n 10
